CLIMATE CHANGE AND THE U.S. PUBLIC

In 1988 Dr. James Hansen, a climatologist and head of the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies, testified to a U.S. Senate committee that he was 99 percent sure that climate change was the result of human activities (Shabecoff, 1988). In Dr. Hansen’s testimony, he stated:

Altogether the evidence that the earth is warming by an amount which is too large to be a chance fluctuation and the similarity of the warming to that expected from the greenhouse effect represents a very strong case. In my opinion, that [sic] the greenhouse effect has been detected, and it is changing our climate now. (Hearings before the Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, 1988)
